Life

'Tis been a nice, relaxing afternoon, just lazing around, lying on the sofa, binging on the television, as I watched four movies in a row on the trial Chinese Star Movies channel on cable; absolutely brilliant stuff.

There was this very interesting movie, 《想飞》, about the convergence of the digital and real worlds, of youths and dreams, of waiting for the next big break, of the great digital divide in society today. It was, well, very well done up--the use of CGI, the alternative, modern cinematographic techniques--freeze-frame motion, digital effects, Matrix-like camera panning and motion-stops, etc--and the new age grunge metal, techno soundtrack.

I guess this recent three-month stint in digital animation and movie-making has suddenly made me become a lot sharper to all these things.

---

Anyhow, it was very interesting, seeing the protagonists in the movie live their lives--one an idealistic computer programmer who quit a software house because his peers refused to buy his idea for a game, who took to striking it out on his own, because he believed in his own idea and wanted to see it realised in full--as he struggled to make ends meet just to see his dream come true; the other was a tough girl, who worked nights as a bartender to pay off her father's gambling debts as she propped up on her shoulders the crumbling family of her slightly-demented mother, too traumatised by the horrors of loansharks and all, and her good-for-nothing brother.

Despite the differences in their backgrounds, the two, well, quite obviously, met, fell in love, and all--the girl started out as the inspiration for the former's game--the imperfect one, the tough fighter and all, who stuck it all out on her own, braved fire and hell for her kin--and gradually they started living out the fantasy that was the programmer's game story.

Oh well. I guess I do no justice to the story.

But, it was a nice show, about fantasy and reality, about differing worlds, about struggles in the digital age--how, despite all the technology and all, social ills still exist, the poor and destitute who struggle to eke out a living on the streets still fight tooth and nail their plight and circumstances while others dream on in the digital age; how, despite all these divides, we're all not quite different after all.

And it was also about, well, I guess, 女人不坏,男人不爱. Haha. Is it? I don't know.

Anyhow, it was a very moving story, at least to me--I felt like it was speaking to me, and it's been quite a while since I've felt this way about a show; or is it because I haven't been watching many movies? Haha.

---

At any rate, it's been good relaxation--a good way of taking my mind off things. Hopefully I'll be able to start anew with everything after a good break this weekend.

Good day.
